    Sometimes, though, that process takes awhile when the client has old, entrenched blind spots that are invisible to them. And, let's be honest. We all have old, entrenched blind spots.

    If clients aren't equipped to perspective-shift, to see themselves as others experience them, it can take a very long time for the counselor to grasp what's really going on in the client's world.

    Athletic coaches have a better vantage point. They actually watch the players play instead of hearing about it from the player. They witness their style of teamwork. They know the player's technique and impact.

    In therapy, I rarely get to see the moment someone swings and misses—or freezes under pressure. I don’t see how they talk to their kids, how they lead a meeting, or how their tone changes when they’re challenged. I hear about their struggles, but only through their own lens.

    My therapy clients' first-person perspective is very important, but adding in the other perspectives for a full 360° view can be key to real growth and progress.  

    Unlike therapy, coaching steps out of the private and personal to include the public behavior and interpersonal impact.

    This is what makes me excited about taking decades of counseling into executive coaching. Just like the athletic coach who actually witnesses the player in action, I no longer have to rely solely on what a client reports is happening. Their first-person input is still foundational, but I also get input from their teams and the people who work closely with them. This jumpstarts their journey in meaningful ways.

    We begin with a 360° view—rich, specific feedback from colleagues, direct reports, and supervisors. We get a map of how the leader is actually showing up: not just what they intend or imagine, but how others actually experience them.
